Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

The weather finally gave us a break last week with rains subsiding somewhat. I enjoyed a busy week fishing daily as well as a couple of evening trips thrown in. Anglers kept busy with some nice redfish, plenty of snook, big sharks and some action with juvenile tarpon.
I fished with on the TR Rushing Construction team last weekend in a charity tournament benefiting the University of Florida Construction School. This is our third time teaming up for this four year old event. We have managed at least a top three finish each year. We once again pulled off second place by releasing some nice redfish to 26 inches as well as snook to 27 inches against some stiff competition. We missed first by a just four inches. It was a fun event with a great awards party and cook out hosted by Hamilton Harbor Yacht Club.
Reds continued to cooperate through the week with most running in the 23 to 26 inch range. As usual higher tide stages brought the best action.
Here is Capt. Ben Geroy and Nick Hamilton with a pair of beauties the released last week...

Baby tarpon have made a good showing recently as the freshwater run off flushes out of the back country creeks from recent rains. These events during the summer usually push plenty of fish from the creeks into the larger shallow bays. Ranging from 15 to 30 pounds, these small tarpon take artificial lures very well and are great fun on light tackle.
Snook were abundant all week, however we did not encounter many large fish. There were plenty of fish in the 18 to 27 inch range to provide catch an release action. One split day trip released nearly 80 snook in one day! That's keeping busy!
We tackled some big sharks on several trips as well. Bull and lemon sharks ranging from 5 to 7 feet were common. On one morning, my golden retriever, Cooper came along to get in the face of a 6 ft. bull shark caught by my daughter Sarah!...
