Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

The annual fall fishing transition is in full swing now and I have been successfully targeting tarpon, snook and redfish on any given trip.
Tarpon are still reliable, with quite a few large fish working on bait schools near Naples passes early in the morning. We have been getting bites on live ladyfish, pinfish and crabs as well as plastic swim baits such as DOA Baitbusters. These are large fish in the 80 to 150 lb. range.
Redfish are now schooling near the passes as well as in the backbays. We boated many redfish last week in the 25 to 30 inch range on live sardines, lipped plugs and fly rod. Last weekend, we encountered a school of perhaps 500 fish on a shallow flat, hooking and landing several on fly and plug before dolphins moved in and chased the school into deep water.
Snook are very cooperative with plenty of the usual 20 to 24 inch fish around. Using live sardines is the sure fire bet for action, however I have had a couple of fly fishermen out recently who caught good numbers on white flies.

Last Sunday, my wife and I headed out for a couple of hours for a little fly fishing. I took the bow for a change and on my very first cast, hooked and landed the second largest snook I have personally caught on fly. The 40" beauty was released quickly after posing for a picture. What a thrill! I like the pointy end of the boat!
