Super Fishing for the end of December and beginning of January

Capt. Roan zumFelde
January 8, 2009
Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

Wow the last of December and the first two weeks of January have been unbelievable. The weather as for the fishing in the Naples and Marco area. I hope it continues but I think it will probably not. Fishing has been as good as I have seen it in many years for this time of the year. Big Snook and some big and small Tarpon have been wandering around everywhere looking for some food and flies.

December ended with a bang and the holiday traffic really picked up on the water . Everything slowing down now after the holidays but fishing is still hot, hot, hot. There is no excuse get out there and catch some fish before winter finally gets hear and shuts the action down. Bait is plentiful outside and near the passes and the Snook are eager to take it. I am finding them from the back Country to the beaches and even some on the near shore wrecks. If you just want to jig the Pompano and the trout are on the edges of the flats leading into deeper water. There is something for everyone so get out and fish. My Fly anglers have been slaying the Snook and Tarpon at night in marco and Naples both. The day fishing on fly has been a little slow but we are getting plenty of hits they are just striking the flies a little short so hookups are at a minimum. I have switched to smaller patterns and have been getting more hookups. Last nights fishing in marco was epic. One Snook 38 inches 19 pounds and multiple Snook in the 27 to 30 inch range were boated from Capri and the Marco River. All on the Fly, little white Polar Fiber Minnows. (Pics will be in the next report).

Naples Fishing Forecast:

What to come for the rest of January and February is a good question. If the weather holds expect continued action like right now. I would expect the Cold to start pushing down and a return to more typical winter fishing. Look to the channels if this happens and you should find good Trout and Pompano along with the occasional Redfish and the ever present ladyfish. The lights should still be good for Snook but the tarpon are going to find the holes for a while. It will be good action but not like we have had we will have to work a little harder for the fish.
GOOD LUCK AND GOOD FISHING Roan z.

Target Species:

Snook Tarpon Redfish Trout Pompano
