Tarpon Fishing on Fire

Capt. Chris McCubbin
May 10, 2009
Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tarpon fishing has really gotten good over the last few weeks and this week was no exception. I have been fishing north of Naples this week and it has really paid off. The fish are feeding good on big live threads freelined in 15-30ft of water. I have been trying to fish the dirtier water as the sharks and mackeral will rip through your bait and tackle really fast. Yesterday May 9th I had Jeff and Greg Finnegan on the boat for a day of tarpon fishing. We had a good day going 3-4 with two fish in the 80lb range and one big girl going close to 140lb.

Snook fishing has finally got back to were it should be here in Naples and will only be getting better. I have been catching most of my fish on the docks around the passes and out on the beaches. The fish are all in the 23-27in range. Pilchards are the way to go, but heavy chumming around the docks is a sure way to get the snapper and jacks fired up, so don't chum to much or you will kill the snook bite. The late afternoon outgoing tides are great, and bigger fish are feeding closer to dark.

Naples Fishing Forecast:

This is the best time of year to catch big tarpon and snook in Naples. The waters are warm, bait is thick and the fish are hungry. Now is the time I like to do full day split charters. You fish from 6-10am and then meet again in the afternoon at 4:30-8:30. This lets you target tarpon and snook at the peak times. We have great tides and this is going to be a great month. Give me a call to reserve your spot. 239 404 6255
