Naples - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well, I have always been known as an honest fellow who tells it as it is. It would do me no good to boast that the last week was easy here on the fishing front.
Early in the week, the action remained strong with some great action with snook and redfish along with plenty of trout keeping us busy. It was quite windy, but an easterly wind does not affect us adversely. Tuesday night, however a strong cold front moved through the area bringing a wind shift to the NW and really stirring things up for a couple days. Water temperatures dropped as much as 15 degrees in some of the back bays in a matter of two nights.
With the cooler temperatures snook fishing totally shut down and the reds laid low during the rest of my trips through Saturday morning. We did find some pretty good cold weather type action however, while fishing some of the deeper holes in the back country and avoiding the gusty winds.
Anglers has success with some nice black drum, gag grouper, sheepshead, mangrove snapper and quite a few nice trout. We were using cut shrimp near the bottom as well as jigs tipped with shrimp. A few nice reds were boated, but they were very hard to find.
Cool weather fishing can be very good even with colder water temperatures as long as it stays cool for a longer period allowing the fish to get into a pattern. Fluctuation of water temperatures as we experience during the start of winter can be tricky.
We are now starting a warm up for a couple of days and I expect the next week to be much better at least until the next front moves through.
Target Species:

redfish, snook, black drum, sheepshead, sea trout
