My wife and I just came back from walking. Our original plan was to walk along the Econ but the water was so high that the trail was flooded. If you intend to go shad fishing (and I still haven't heard any really strong reports) then expect high water. For you walkers, we ended up on the Florida Trail not far from home.
Tuesday I had an old root canal re-rooted (or maybe re-canalled), almost four hours in a dental chair. That was some kind of fun.
Wednesday I was part of a four boat half day charter on Mosquito Lagoon. My anglers were Raimond and Gator (my name for him) from Montreal. Gator didn't speak English and I know maybe a dozen words in French so our communication waren't too good.
Even though it was only about 40 degrees and blowing from 20-25, these gentlemen wanted to toss lures. We did. We got four bites and put two fish in the boat, a 15 inch trout and a 26 inch redfish. We actually saw quite a few fish, more than I would have thought with weather like that.
Tom Van Horn wisely anchored at the entrance to the Haulover Canal and soaked bait. His anglers got three reds to 40".
Keith Kalbfleisch likewise soaked bait. They got a 47" red.
Chris Myers used bait to get three reds to 11 pounds.
The temperature had skyrocketed into the 50s by the time we were done.
Friday I was supposed to fish Danny Trosset. He had a meeting come up, but it poured hard a good part of the day so I doubt that we would have gone anyway.
Saturday I took a CPR class with the American Heart Association to renew my certification. Everyone reading this should know basic first aid and CPR!
Yesterday (Happy Belated Valentine's Day everyone) Ben Jenkinson, a fly fisherman from Portland, Maine, joined me for a day's fly fishing on the Mosquito Lagoon. I figured it would be a brisk boat ride when I saw frost on everything I passed on the drive over. Plus that NW wind was blowing at about 15. Oh, yeah, it was REAL brisk, painfully brisk.
We found fish in every place we looked but two. Some spots had a lot. They were mostly lying around looking for trouble, and it was a tough, tough day. We did see one fish tail for about five seconds. Ben did not get a bite. He only had three fish even respond to the fly, and those responses were not positive. On the bright side, in spite of it being Sunday, there were very few boats on the lagoon. I guess that cold, windy weather kept all the sensible people off the water!
