Palm Beach - Saltwater Fishing Report
The past week offered plenty of cold air and wind, tough conditions at times, we must roll with mother natures punches. Warm air would be nice but the fronts continue to push south.
The inshore fishing for snook and tarpon is still action packed, key is work sea walls and muddy bottom flats for best results., early morning and late afternoon the bite is steady high noon offer fantastic sight fishing.. Live bait's and doa shrimp worked great near shorelines and seawalls provoke strikes. The tarpon at times but can be seen rolling on the surface be sure to stay quite and get in front of the fish for best results. Snook can be found basking in the sun ambushing baits as the current sweeps them through the area.
The seawalls and docks are full of sheepshead, willing to take live shrimp or fiddler crabs. The sheepshead are not really sought after that much, but not only do they taste great, they put on a great battle with light tackle. Sight fishing for these zebra looking fish can be a blast, most certainly with kids and novice anglers aboard.
Jacks and bluefish are also around and on the prowl, these feisty fish might not be highly prized, but they put up a great fight. The grass flats are still teaming with ladyfish, pompano, snapper and drum. Bucktail jigs tipped with shrimp will get your rod bent. The key is to locate bait schools and stay in depths from 2 to 6 feet.
Lake Okeechobee offers fantastic largemouth bass numbers with shiners and along grass mats and saw grass edges. Largemouth also very active as they begin to stage on beds. Doa airheads and 4 inch paddle tails entice explosive top water strikes. Largemouth are averaging 3 to 8 pounds.
Peacock bass in local canal offer great fishing for those with light tackle gear and fly gear. Peacock are active at high noon when water warm up. Sight fishing with a fly rod provokes fantastic strikes and drag screaming runs. Typical size has been 2 to 5 pounds.
