Inshore Fishing Report February 1, 2007 Jupiter/Palm Beach
Happy Snookin. Snook season is now open. Do to our mild winter we have had the Snook bite has been great. The Snook have been feeding near sea walls, pilings, and bridges. The best baits to use for the Snook have been shrimp and greenies. The Lox River has been producing some nice Snook in the 2 to 10 lb range along with some nice sized Fat Snook ranging from 18 to 25”. The Palm beach area has been great for Snook near the docks and drop offs during the day. The night bite has produced nice fish also with many of them taking live shrimp drifted under dock lights with the current. For the fly fishers the night fishing is the best time to target the Snook, its not uncommon to catch double digit numbers of Snook on the fly. Remember the slot for the Snook is 27-34” and pinch the tail.
The flats fishing has been decent the past few weeks but the Pompano bite has been slow. The Pomp’s haven’t showed up do to the warm water. The Lady fish are abundant on the flats along with the snapper, and sheepshead. The deeper drop offs on the flat have produced some nice Black Drum and Croakers lately, these fish are great on light tackle do to there bulldog runs.
The river fishing has been great for Jacks and Snapper. The Jacks are in schools and are ranging from 1 to 15 lbs. The best spots to target them is near sea walls and deep channels. Live bait and artificial lures will both work for these fish. The Snapper bite is still great, these little scavengers will take a shrimp any chance they get. Most if the Snapper are legal size and are great for the kids do to the not stop action.
The Fresh water bite for the Largemouth Bass is picking up, the fish are going to start spawning soon which makes for the best chance to hook into that hog of a lifetime. Live shiners and rattle traps have worked great for catching these fish. The Peacock Bass bite has been ok these fish are hanging on the drop offs of the grass flats. The Peacocks will start to move up on the shallows soon, as long as no cool fronts cool the water down. I am predicting mid February the Peacock bite will start to get hot.
