Fly fishing around the bay in Panama City Florida

Capt. James Pic

Panama City - Saltwater Fishing Report

As spring continues to roll on into summer the fishing heats up along with the temps. I have a lot of seasoned fly fishermen and those that have little or no experience with salt water fly fishing.
As Bill learned this morning, presentation is very important. Fly fishing with me will open a lot of doors to new experience and an opportunity to improve your skills if you would like. Bill fished with another guide in Mosquito Lagoon a couple of days ago for reds with no luck. He told me the water was super clear and they saw fish. Unfortunately he couldn't reach them and for whatever reason his guide was unable to help him maximize his cast.
As a student of the art of fly fishing I find it as much of a challenge to help those that need it as it is to catch fish. Most days we do both. Bill could cast 25 to 35', had good rythm and was not one that false cast a lot more than neccessary. A couple of hours into the trip I noticed something about his presentation; when he let the fly fall into the water he would forcibly drop his tip lower to the water than his fly line prior to the line straightening. That motion pulled the fly back toward him abruptly ending his cast. I know that sounds very technical but what it means is that somewhere along the way Bill thought he had to force his fly instead of letting the line feed properly through the guides for a gentle presentation. He took my advice and added 20 to 30' to his cast's by the end of the trip. Job well done, Bill.
He caught some hard pulling fish including spanish, ladies, blue runners and blues. Unfortunately no reds today.
Fly fishermen....Panama City is a great place to fish, lot's of fish, lot's of fun.
