Panama City Warm Weather is Heating up the Top-Water Action

Capt. Rob Womble
April 3, 2008
Panama City - Saltwater Fishing Report

The water temp is finally were it needs to be for the trout and redfish to really start hammering the top-water plugs. Over the last two weeks we have been catching some really nice trout and redfish. The baitfish are showing up a little more every day. You know its top-water time when the pinfish show up in good numbers.

I'm going to keep this short because we have been crushing the reds and trout and we want to let the picks do the talking, so I'm going to quickly tell you what is working. Skitter Walk Top Water Plugs, Spook JR plugs and SPRO plugs have been working the best. Have a soft bait ready for the back-up throw when the fish misses the plug. Dark plugs in low light conditions and lighter or bright colors in clear conditions. Keep in mind this isn't no 50 -100 mixed bag mostly under sized trout type fishing. We are already catching trout in the 23 to 25 inch class, so check those knots and be sure to use good leader material. OK enough of that, you know what….I'll just post the pictures.

These reds came out of a school in about seven inches of water. It's nice to see the fish before you catch them.

With the weather warming up a bit there will be a lot more boats on the water. Make sure you keep an eye out for the other guy. As always good luck on the water.

Panama City Fishing Forecast:

If you want to catch bigger slot sized (keeper) redfish and some really big trout you need to be on the flats and shallow. Yes of course you can go out in the bay and chum up some trout, but for consistant big fish action, now is the time to have a top-water plug on your rod.
