Panama City - Saltwater Fishing Report

PANAMA CITY FLORIDA CAST AND BLAST
The last couple of weeks have been great for the Trout, Redfish and Ducks. Capt. Todd and I have run several cast and blast trips in both North and West Bay. The Trout have been holding up in deeper holes and the creeks and inlets that feed the bays. Just about any creek or bayou that leads to East, West or North Bay (so long as it has deep enough water) will be holding Trout. Suspending Mirror lures, Popping Corks, Gulp sinking minnows and Yozurri stick baits have been working very well. Long cast and a quite approach are the key.

Two for one. They both hit the same plug!

The Redfish have been on fire in North and West Bay. Again the bait selection is the same. Gold spoons, Gulp sinking minnows, popping corks, Top water and suspending Mirror lures have worked the best. I have seen several other fishermen doing very well on the reds using spinner baits. Whatever your bait selection, nine times out of ten confidence in your lure and working it correctly is more important than the lure selection.
The duck hunting is real good right now in both North and West Bays. Capt. Todd has run the duck hunting portion of all our Cast and Blast trips and has put our customers on the ducks. He reports good numbers of Redheads, Bluebills, Bufflehead, Scoters and Golden Eyes. The hunts have given our hunters multiple opportunities at a variety of ducks. In some cases because of the terrain features in the location we set up at, our hunters get more than one chance at the same duck. Often when our hunters take a shot at a single or even a group of ducks after they pass the spread they turn around and pass back by our location because their escape route is blocked by tall pine trees. For large numbers of Redheads, Bluebills and Buffleheads it hard to beat North Bay. Setting up in the right location can give you plenty of shooting opportunities all day long. For some of the best Wood Duck, Teal, Ring Neck and others it’s hard to beat hunting on one of our private ponds with plenty of standing timber. We have also been shooting some Mallards and a few Pin Tails. Its low impact and lots of fun, a perfect hunt for the kids.

One more thing one the duck hunting, this week a couple friends of Capt. Todd and I were setting up their duck blind over off Shell Point in West Bay when another local area duck hunter (guide) who I will not name came up on them and began to shout at them because he felt they were setting up in one of his spots. Well after a few minutes of shouting the angry duck hunter and his party moved on. I bring this up because the bay is open to anyone. No one hunter or guide owns any spot anywhere on the bay regardless of how long he has been hunting and fishing in the area. I recommend you stand your ground and kindly ask the person who is claiming the bay as his own to move on. If a confrontation ensues, take a look at the registration numbers on the person’s boat and immediately call the fish and wildlife people and report the incident. If the boat has no numbers….well call the fish and wildlife and tell them that too. Give them a good description of the boat and the people in question. Enough calls on a single person or guide may be enough to get them off the water for good.

Capt. Todd and I hope you all had a great Christmas and we wish you a happy New Year. Please take the time to remember all those American service members who won’t be able to spend the holidays with us because they are busy securing our freedoms. Good luck on the water and in the woods.
