Panama City - Saltwater Fishing Report

Panama City/ Florida Panhandle
I wish there was something really spectaculer to report but with a few exceptions fishing has gone to hell the last few weeks. Of course Bill is not going to help, with tropical storm force winds blowing all this week. Some of the bright spots: Since the water has started cleaning up the big spanish and blues have move back into the bay. Lots of lady fish for those just wanting to have some fun whether on conventional tackle or fly. When the weather is right(which hasn't been very much lately) we have been catching some nice trout and a lot of them. We have managed some reds both on the fly and on live bait.
There are lot of aggresive sharks in the bay. We have caught many bonnet heads' and have had hundred pound sand, blacktips and bulls chasing topwater like tiny torpedoes early in the morning.
We have needed the rain we have had this summer and in the long run will probably help the overall picture. As soon as the bay flushes I look to see big numbers and big fish caught. TS Bill should move some legal grouper into the bay and to the some of the inshore wrecks. Speaking of inshore wrecks, they are full of snapper and b-liners, and I mean good fish and a lot of them. We went out a week ago and put a bunch of nice snapper in the boat fishing a public spot 10 miles out.]
Basically I look for the fishing to turn very soon. Lots of bait and shortening days later this month will help to trigger the bite.
Don't forget to come into the store if you are in town. We are now carrying Jim Teeney lines and have other new products. For those that don't know, we are the most complete light tackle and fly shop for many miles.
Coming up in October will be the first annual spanish fly tournement Sponsored in part by Temple Fork Flyrods. This two day tournement will begin on Saturday October 11, 2003 and end with a fish fry the next day. Details are still being worked out but I can assure you that the bays are full of big spanish that time of year and we will be happy to tell anyone that enters the tournement where to catch them. The only two rules so far will be; no conventional tackle allowed on the boat but chumming will be allowed.
