Panama City - Saltwater Fishing Report
Panama City/Northwest Florida
Snapper season closes at the end of October which will slow down the offshore fishing. Grouper will be caught all through the winter if you can brave the cold winds and high seas that come with this time of year. Many legal grouper are being caught in the bay this fall. Recently I had a trip that we caught 3 legal grouper, 24 inches, 27 inches and 30 inches. All were caught in eight feet of water on 5 1/4 inch silver and black rebels. Look for this to continue for a few more weeks.
Reds and specks are on the move. We are starting to catch them close to the mouths of the bayous and even up in some of the canals. West Bay and East Bay will be your best bet for the next 30 days. Live shrimp, DOA's and twitch baits seem to produce the best fish. Using a small bait will produce small fish this time of year, I recomend you step up to larger baits for a while. Reds are in the pass, most oversize, but still a lot of fun. These will start moving later this month, some offshore, some to the flats and some to the bayous.
As with every year at this time you get a lot of big spanish in the bay. Mixed in you will find an occasional cobia. Both of these can be caught on twitch baits, gotcha's and bucktails. There have been some knock-off "Gotcha" baits come out this year, the most prevelent is the Tsunami distributed too and sold mostly by Wal-Mart. These lures break easily and are poorly made, basically they suck and I suggest you don't waste your time or money with them.
Look for some expansion in our store next year. As of now we do not intend to raise the price of the guide trips next year but that will depend on the price of fuel. I will still offer half days for $200 for the remainder of the year.
