Panama City - Saltwater Fishing Report

Panama City/N.W. Florida
Water has warmed up to the low 70's which means everything is starting to happen. Some of the fish have been a little slow to start such as trout and reds but with the passing of the full moon these fish should start showing up in the usual spots, getting ready to spawn and of course, carrying a big appetite. Live shrimp for trout and especially reds are the best in May. For the fly fisherman, crab and shrimp patterns along with a few special flies that we tie up in the shop work real well. Oranges, blacks and gold are best for reds. Some will be found along the beach but most will be up on the flats in big schools.
Out in the big bay the spanish, blues, blue runners, ladyfish and jacks are all showing up. Early morning and late afternoon action with topwater will attract huge blowups and lots of action. 3 to 5 inch twitch baits will work really well for all species during when the sun gets high. Try fishing points ledges and transition areas for best results.
Offshore the snapper fishing has been great this year. A few kings have already shown up. All of this will continue to get better as summer arrives.
Cobia are almost over with a few straglers being caught here and there. Pompano fishing has been good this year. Look for deep holes next to the beach for these tasty fighters.
Fly fishing club meets at the store, first Tuesday of each month at 6:30. Come by and see all of the new stuff including some great new fly patterns and the largest selection of freshwater and bass fishing equipment in the area. Pick up a six pack on the way out along with your live shrimp for $2.50 a dozen.
Tight lines, JP
