Florida Fishing Report for Panama City & Destin

Capt. James Pic
October 5, 2004
Panama City - Saltwater Fishing Report

Panama City/NW Florida

Fishing has been very good since the storms. A lot of grouper have been caught in the bay and on most of the close public spots. Any kind of bait will work but I prefer fresh cut bonita. We caught some nice keeper scamp about a seek ago withing five miles of the pass. Also we have been working some of the hard bottom to the southwest catching some really big sharks with ease. There are a lot of them out there.

In the bay there are a lot of extra grouper on the trash piles located throughout. You can catch them in water from six to 30 feet deep. The flounder are on the move and those can be caught in transition areas either by using live bait or bouncing grubs. Reds are doing well along with trout we had a couple of seven pound trout a week ago. When you locate the schools of reds if your very careful about how you fish them you can put just about as many in the boat as you want. Two weeks ago we caught 23 in about three hours, all on artificial. Hard baits and soft plastics.

Fly fishermen, this is your time of the year. The big bonita and spanish run has started. If you want a good pull I suggest you pick up the phone make a hotel reservation, call me and lets go fishing. It's not unusual to put 15 or more six to twelve pound bonita(liitle tunny) in the boat along with the big four and five pound spanish with them. Over the years we have also caught kings, dolphin, tripletail and black fin tuna while chasing the schools off the beach. It's all sight fishing and is very fast. We also sight fish for reds this time of the year and with a six hour booking I can hook you up with all of them in one trip.

I'm good. All you have to do is call. Tight lines, JP

More Fishing Reports:

Depending on the time of the year I can normally put you on legal grouper in the bay, monster speckled trout, lot's of fly fishing action and just about everything else that swims and good tablefare.
