Panama City - Saltwater Fishing Report

Panama City/NW Florida
Another summer is finally here. After two weeks of record breaking catches reality set in with lots of rain and wind this week.......The bay will settle down by the second week of June and then the "record catches" should be happening again.
Yes, fishing is great this year. I have finally located some quality reds. Just last week Dane Hobaugd, a regular for years, fished topwater plugs only. We caught the normal 100 blues, spanish, ladies and blue runners before we moved into a dozen big trout and half dozen reds....Nothing like a big red rolling up on a topwater plug! Trout fishing should be on fire this year. In the last two weeks we have put three over six pounds in the boat, several in the 4 to 6 range and lot's of 20 inchers. I think the muddy water helped this year. I tend to ask my clients to release the really big trout, so even though we are catching some "gators" most are going back alive. For the non-believers, go to my web site, JP2Fish.com and check out the 10 1/2 pound trout I caught and released last summer.
Along with the trout and reds, the spanish, blues and ladies have been thick and a lot of fun both for the artificial guys and for the fly fishermen. We managed to find a spot with some pompano in the bay catching a couple each time we hit it. Last, we are picking up a few flounder here and there and even though we have only caught three legal grouper's in the bay so far this year I expect to start picking up more of those in the near future.
I'm quite busy this year, running almost every day...so if you want to fish with the most consistant guide in the area I suggest you make your reservation as far in advance as possible. Tarpon are showing up, weather permitting I am running full day tarpon fly fishing trips this year. I have all of the equipment and flies...all you have to do is be able to make the cast.
See you on the water........and if you don't need 'em, let 'em go.
