Panama City - Saltwater Fishing Report

Panama City, NW Florida
Fishing has been hot and cold this fall....i could lie and give you a report of fairy tales but as always I will tell the truth.
The red tide did a number on the bay fishing. Two bouts of it, one in September another in October. There were a lot of specs, reds and flounder floating during that time. This was, without a doubt, the best year for trout i can remember...even better than i remember when i was 12 and 13 years old...back in the day when you could stand on the bank in Pretty Bayou and catch five pound fish. The true effect of the red tide for this year will not be able to be counted till spring. The fishery will jump back the question is; how long will it take?
Good news, i just saved a bunch...oh sorry...good new is there are a lot of blues and some flounders left in the bay. We caught about fifty blues, some spanish and a few flounder on a couple of charters last week. Up in the bay you can go to the hot water canal in Warren Bayou and catch lots of small trout and reds with an occasional jack or small tarpon. This area is catch and release only till the end of February.
There are fish to catch, just have to work a little for them unless your like me, spend 200 days a year on the water and know where they are. Mouths of bayous and creeks are the place through this warm weather and as it continues to cool down the fish will move up into the creeks and bayous as they do each winter.
Duck season starts in a week and this year is supposed to be the best hatch in thirty years...book a trip and we will get some ducks.
Good luck this winter and happy holidays,
Capt. James Pic
