Florida Fishing Report for Panama City & Destin

Capt. James Pic
May 15, 2006
Panama City - Saltwater Fishing Report

Panama City/NW Florida

Good news for the trout and redfish guys. Been spending a lot of time in West Bay, catching a lot of trout. Some areas the fish are 12 inches but in other areas we have been finding bigger fish. Catching them both on spinning gear and fly. DOA Shrimp was the ticket Saturday morning and on the fly a white deceiver with black peacock hurl on the back....looks just like a menhaden. This is good news especially after the brutal bout of red tide at the end of last year. I believe that a lot of the really big trout move in from the gulf so we should expect those guys to start showing up soon.

There are a lot of reds this year. All over west bay. Caught several over the weekend both on spinning and the fly. Look for pushing water early in the morning. Stay low, cause if you can see them chances are they can see you.

We have been catching a lot of flounder lately. Tried to get out last weekend to stick a few but when we got to the spot to start gigging the brand new battery I bought at West Marine that afternoon did not have a lick of charge on it...was completely dead. On another note, Boyette and Casey Hardware down on third street has got the best flounder lights in town. They make them right there and as someone that has done the flounder gigging thing for a long time, I highly recommend you guys check them out. Things that make them so awesome is going to be ease of repair or to replace various parts. I bought the double light rig which is worth every penny of what they are asking. Go down there and check them out.

Saw something on another site a few days ago..."where are the spanish"....well man, they are here and they are big. You just have to find them. They are constantly on the move, working deep drops and ledges. Chumming is the best way to catch big spanish in the summer.

That's about it for now...course there are going to be good days and bad but all in all the fishing is very good. If your considering a guide trip, I am filling up quickly especially around the holidays. Try and make your reservation as soon as possible.

Good luck and see you on the water.

JP
