Florida Fishing Report for Panama City & Destin

Capt. James Pic
March 28, 2007
Panama City - Saltwater Fishing Report

Panama City/NW Florida

We have had an unbelievable last few weeks. Killing the sheeps in the pass, fishing Warren Bayou catching all kinds of wild stuff on the fly and working some of my early spring trout holes.

Of course, the spanish rolled in about a week ago which made for a making a hot beginning of the season even hotter. Last Saturday morning we picked up our limit of 60 spanish on light tackle and fly gear. Then we moved to a little "secret spot" and my client caught a 6 lb. plus trout on his first cast with a DOA Shrimp. Everything is going as planned and I expect it to continue throught the rest of the year just like always.

We have started venturing outside looking for cobia and the run should heat up, peak and slow down over the next three weeks. Bonita, a great fish to catch on spin or fly, will start to hit the beach soon.

FLY FISHING

Many people through the years have fly fished with me. I have taught countless numbers of people to fish with a fly rod and improved countless others skills. Fly fishing in salt water is a tremendous thrill and anyone who has ever picked up a fly rod should give it a shot.

I offer fly fishing trips for the beginner as well as the seasoned fly caster. I have personally caught many tarpon, reds, jacks and other species on the fly and have even caught what is called the "back country slam"...snook, tarpon, bone. There are very few fly fishing guides in the area and I feel that none come close to my experience in these waters and my ability ot give you the best opportunity to catch fish. I will supply all of your equipment and patiently work with your casting if needed.

There are many more species in the water than reds to catch on the fly....20lb. jacks, big bonita, kings, dolphin, spanish, pompano and even sharks are just a few species that will readily chomp on the right fly at the right time of the year. If you don't want to chase redfish all day and maybe catch or maybe not call me for something different and entertaining. After all, your vacation won't last forever. Yes, we actually hook sharks on the fly. If your coming to Panama City and want a truly great fly fishing experience give me a call and I'll get you on the boat.

Like I said, season is here and fishing is good. Make your res and let's get on some fish!
