Florida Fishing Report for Panama City & Destin

Capt. James Pic
July 23, 2007
Panama City - Saltwater Fishing Report

Panama City/NW Florida

These trout were caught a few days ago by Dana Blackwood of North Georgia. Her and her husband Marty, pounded the trout and then the big spanish during a six hour live bait trip. This has been what we have been doing every day for a couple of weeks now.

We have been picking up a few reds here and there but mostly concentrating on the big trout. My big trout spots start working this time of the year. Last year we had two fish over 8lbs in August. Two years back, before the red tides, we had several eights and a ten pound fish. I really don't call a trout a "gator" unless it's over six which is about 25 to 26 inches long. During August we normally put about a dozen or more big trout in the boat.

August is also a great month for grouper in the bay. I like to trout fish the first half and grouper/flounder fish the second half of the trip.

I would like to thank all of my old clients and new ones for this year. Been a great fishing season so far with a lot of fish caught. Because of you I'm up three years in a row. Thank you again.

One of my long time clients emailed me this morning saying that I was "eluded" to on another report. My response; Just because someone has fishing report doesn't make them a fisherman. A long time boat dealer in town who knows some of these guys said to me this morning "I guess if they have a boat and a six pack license they can be a guide". We have seen them come and go over the years and that will continue. Some will develope skills and become quite successful but others will weed themselves out. Unfortunately, you the client, suffer and have no way of knowing who's good or bad until you get on a boat. Those of us that have pioneered guide fishing in our area shouldn't have to look over our shoulder because one of the new guys can't find fish. Ask the questions, after all, would you want a part time or new cardiologist giving you a by-pass?

As for me....Several thousand clients over the past 12 years can't be wrong.

Good luck and see you on the water.

Capt. James Pic
