Panama City - Saltwater Fishing Report
Summer is over and the first real cold front has blown thru. The trigger has been pulled and the fish are gobbling up anything they can get there mouths on, getting ready for winter.
The second phase of snapper was not as productive as the first but we still managed some nice fish. We are catching a lot of black snappers(mangroves/grey) in the pass along with big reds. This is also the time of year for grouper on the inshore wrecks. Grouper will be open till the end of November.
This is a great time to fly fish. I came up with a new "slam" a few days ago but the wind kept us from getting the third species. The "jack slam" as I have named it, is one of each; amberjack, jack crevelle and blue runner. Although fun to attempt by no means will it be easy. We have been getting a lot of 4 and 5 pound amberjacks and jack crevelle and some 3 pound blue runners. Any way you slice it they are an awesome pull on the fly. Throw in a ten pound bonito, spanish or big skip jack, all of which are easy to find this time of year and you have a great fly fishing adventure. There's no one in the area guiding who has more fly fishing experience than I. I'm not going to pole you around and a bug infested canal hoping for you to get a shot at a red...i'm going to find you some fish easy to catch and put you in position to catch them. As countless persons will tell you, I also have the ability to teach you what you need to know to fly fish in salt water.
flounder run will start any day now. We have been picking up a few here and there. I look for the big push to start by the end of the month.
