Destin, Navarre, Pensacola fishing report

Capt. Eddie Woodall
April 14, 2009
Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

The water temperature is finally getting right, but the excessive amount of rain in the past three weeks has the water muddy and the salinity level is way too low to keep the fish happy in shallow water. We are catching good numbers of Spanish mackerel in and around the mouth of Pensacola Pass. Clark spoons, Got-Cha lures, and float and straw rigs are the lures of choice.

The Sheepshead are still thick on the deeper structure around the passes. We used ten dozen shrimp in three and a half hours last Saturday to catch and release at least forty five fish.
The Jacks are starting to migrate along beaches. They seem to be running the trough out close to the second sand bar. They will eat just about anything. I like casting big chugging plugs at these schools of fish; they will destroy a top water plug. The key is to get the bait out in front of the school. When they get close enough to see and hear it, start working it as fast as you can and keep it in the water. More than likely, the first fish will miss it, so don't stop working it because the second one always has better aim!

The Pompano are becoming more and more plentiful as everyday passes and there are a few Bull Reds still around, sight casting to them in the shallow water along the beach is a blast.

The big female Specks are now making their way to the deep water structure close to the flats. As soon as we get a break in the weather, flats' fishing for Speckled Trout and Red Fish is going to go off the charts.

The skillful angler must be full of humble thoughts!

I know one thing for sure - You ain't going to catch'em sittin' on the couch!!
So get out there, take a kid fishing and have a Blessed Day!
