Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report
The last ten days have been picture perfect days for spring fishing!! And the fishing was great, too!
Inshore: The Sheepshead fishing is winding down, I'm still on some fish, but most of them have moved on. If you know where they are you can still catch a nice mess now and then. The Speckled trout fishing is improving every day. They're not being caught in big numbers, but I'm catching nice Speck's on every trip in the three to five pound class. Heck, I'd rather catch one big fish than six little ones anyway! Live shrimp is catching most of the fish, although I have started using artificial baits in the last two days with some success. Catching slot sized Red Fish is getting easier every day. The fish on the flats are eating the soft plastic baits from Big Bite Baits very well. The Bio Bait six inch jerk minnow in Clear Copper Flake Core is a hot color. When the sun gets high overhead I'm still heading to the docks with live shrimp.
Out on the beach, Pompano, Jack Crevalle and Spanish mackerel are the targeted species right now. Then, just off the beach a little, there are lots of Cobia hunters out there. All the big guns are still at it, they claim that the biggest part of the migration still hasn't happened yet. I don't know for sure but it just seems to me that it's one of those seasons that a lot of fish slipped by undetected and the run is about over.
Red Snapper season is open in State waters now, and the two trips I've been on for them have been very successful. We caught a four man limit in fairly short form both days. Well, with the limits at two per person it doesn't take long any more. We did find a real nice fish in the 20 pound class on one of my spots; this fish was caught on a SPRO two ounce bucktail jig. We pulled up to the numbers and the bottom machine lit up with fish, as we were drifting to get the anchor spot I picked up a 20 pound test spinning outfit with the jig on it and made a cast back over the spot and WHAM it go hit, at first I thought Amberjack but after about five minutes the fish was acting a lot more like a big Snapper. Then we saw color - man I love it when a plan comes together!!

The bait is showing up strong and the Kings are here with it, I haven't run any King trips yet, but I have been tying wire leaders for the last couple of days getting prepared for my first king of the season.
The next two months are my most favorite time of the year to be fishing; I just love fishing the spring time! I sure am blessed to have the job that I have, if you get a chance and want to enjoy a day on the water, give me a call, it's better than any other type of therapy that you can find.
Three-fourths of the Earth's surface is water, and one-fourth is land. It is quite clear that the good Lord intended us to spend triple the amount of time fishing as taking care of the lawn!!!
I know one thing for sure - You ain't gonna catch'em sittin' on the couch!!
