Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

Redfish are running in Pensacola Bay with all being over slot. There are many triple and double header hookups happening right now with these guys everywhere in the bay. Site fishing is the name of the game. You can literally see hundreds of them thrashing up on the surface. A great time of the year to get that monster pumpkin redfish. For the Reds I like to use a 5000 series with a med action rod. Spooled with 15lb mono main line and a 40lb fluorocarbon leader. You can use just about use any heavy soft plastic you got or buck tail. From 1oz to 2oz works great to cast a far distance into the school.
Sheapshead are around the rock piles, bridges and deeper docks. I like to use a 3000 to 4000 series reel with 10lb to 12lb mono main. Using live shrimp and fiddlers on a carolina rig with a 18 inches of fluorocarbon leader about 15 to 20lb strength. Try to use a small hook size 1 or 2 hook. Weight depends on the current from 1/2 oz to 2 oz egg sinker. Cast near structure and let sit on bottom until they pick it up. Don't be surprised if these guys steal your bait. They are called the convict fish for a reason.
Black Drum like to lay in the deeper channels facing into the current waiting for a meal to come to them. These guys tend to fight really hard at first and give up just as quick. 4000 to 5000 series with 12 to 15 lb main line. Rig a Carolina rig with 20 to 30 lb fluorocarbon on a 2o to 3o circle hook depending of bait size may need to step up or down. Using live blue crabs or live shrimp. Get ready when this guy grabs your bait.
Just because its cold out doesn't mean you should put that fishing gear up. Get out there a little later so its not as cold. Only way to catch is to have a line in the water. Stop making excuses and enjoy the day.
Thanks,
Capt. Scotty Gerdine
