Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

Let's start out with some drag-screaming action on the lower end of Pensacola Bay.

The past few trips have been outstanding with a plethora of inshore species to choose from. Some days we get into a good mix of trout and redfish, but over the past couple days, we have had the chance to go after the ever-powerful Bonita. If you like hearing your drag sing for what seems like forever and watch your line peel off the spool, this is the fish for you.

Bonita are considered an offshore / nearshore fish, but they come into our bays from time to time feeding on the millions of glass minnows that congregate in the bay. When they come in and start feeding, it's an amazing sight to see. The water looks like it's boiling, and you won't believe how strong these fish pull on light tackle.

Mixed in with some of the bonita are skipjacks, Spanish mackerel, and a few bluefish.
No wonder I love this job; every day is a new adventure, and it is awesome to get out and have a fantastic day on the water while just going with the flow and enjoying the challenge of changing up your fishing plan to suit whatever's biting.

As a professional inshore guide I feel that when you see an opportunity to introduce your guests to all the different species of our fishery, you take advantage of it. Bonita are one of the strongest nearshore species and when they come inshore, why not take the time to go after them and have some fun?

The tackle I'm using to catch these great fun fighting inshore species is
Penn's Battle 3000s spooled with 10 lb SpiderWire Stealth Braid with 40 lb leader matched up with All Star 7ft medium rods. I'm tossing a variety of lures at these guys, including small buck tail jigs and MirrOlures. There's still plenty of summer left, so don't waste another day off on the couch; get out on the water and go fishing.

Thanks for stopping by!
