Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

On the flats in the upper bay areas, the trout and redfish bite has been outstanding recently. The key to fishing these upper bay areas and most of our inshore waters is to watch the tides and fish when the water has good movement. My last few trips have been outstanding; we've caught tons of trout and have hauled in a few decent redfish.

Barbara shows off a nice 18" Speck

When fishing the upper bay areas, we're tossing all artificial's. I really enjoy this style of fishing, because it brings me back to my roots when I bass-fished up north. The artificial's I'm tossing range from top-water plugs like MirrOlure's Top Pup to soft plastics like Bass Assassin's 5" Jerk Shad and Blurp's 4" Ghost Shrimp. The soft plastics are rigged on either a 1/8 to ¼ oz jig head, which when working it slow and bouncing it off the bottom, looks like an injured bait, and will hopefully entice a strike from a trophy trout or redfish.
Down in the Santa Rosa Sound area, the trout bite is going strong, but I feel it's been better up in the upper bay areas. If you're looking to hook up on a big redfish, then Pensacola Pass is the place to be right now.
Cliff is proud of his trophy 40" Redfish.

Large schools of redfish have made their way into the pass, and are feeding on the thousands of menhaden pouring out of the bay right now.
Chris shows off his biggest redfish of the day!

Joan shows off her trophy a 36" Redfish.

Get the tide right and it's fish on with the right bait! Just off the beach, the King Mackerel bite is also going strong. Go catch a few live cigar minnows or herring and slow troll them or drift around the Massachusetts and you're sure to hook up on some drag screamers.
May is just about over, and it was another great trout and redfish month just like last year. The first two weeks of June are typically great as well for trout and redfish. I'm looking forward to showing my clients some great inshore fishing the next few weeks.

Till the next adventure.
