Northwest Florida Report for Destin to Perdido Key

Capt. Eddie Woodall
June 15, 2008
Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

The beach fishing is as hot as it gets right now. King Mackerel are abundant around the big schools of bait on the channel markers going out Pensacola Pass, along with schools of False Albacore and Spanish Mackerel for the light tackle and fly fisherman to have fun with. I've been having a good time sight casting to the smaller Sharks on the beach, and catching a few on top water plugs, which is a blast! Just in the past few days there has been an influence of pods of Tarpon showing up. As usual this time of the year there have been several sightings of Sail Fish in close, within 5 miles of the beach.

The inshore fishing is in the summer pattern. The water temperature is over 85 degrees now and the Specks have finished their first spawn of the season. I'm catching my Speckled Trout early in the morning on top water plugs. I like the walk the dog plugs a lot but the chug plugs are catching fish also. After the sun gets up they are falling into the deeper water and are tough to catch. I'm catching Red Fish in a lot of different places. During mid day I'm sight casting to them on the shallow sand flats and docks that have a roof on them that cast a shadow, pitch a 3 inch Berkley Gulp Shrimp on a ¼ oz. jig head into the shadow and hang on, if there are any Reds there you will find out quick.

I'm catching lots of Snapper and Amberjack in State waters. The weather has been just right for my style of fishing for these fish. If you've never tried light tackle Snapper fishing you should. Once you get the taste you won't ever want to bottom fish for them again!

No matter how good a man gets at fishing, he will never land every fish he hooks.

I know one thing for sure - You ain't going to catch'em sittin' on the couch!!
So get out there, and take a kid fishing. God Bless.
