Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

Pensacola Fishing Charters and Instructional Guiding at Redfish University-Dec. 28-30, 2012--WOW!! What a massive 2012 at Redfish University!!! Thank you Redfish University anglers, clients, Pro Staff sponsors(especially Pure Fishing, Yamaha and Maverick Boat Co.) and fans for a fantastic 2012 fishing season. We've surpassed all of our goals for the year and ended the 2012 Redfish University at 223 instructional and guided trips for the year!!! In the process, Redfish University has provided the best angling education available on the Gulf Coast to hundreds of local anglers, traveling anglers and even a few local inshore charter-fishers. We're looking forward to an even more successful 2013 season with many surprises in store.
The last few instructional trips for redfish and speckled trout in 2012 were outstanding although a few mornings were painfully cold and some very difficult low water conditions. As always, we produced a big number of speckled trout up to 4# and quite a few redfish. We switched to some much smaller Berkley Gulp! baits and scaled down our leader diagram a bit to draw more strikes in the harsh conditions and rapidly falling water temperatures. Most bites in these conditions will come as the bait is resting after a series of strategic movements in areas with large numbers of fish. We encourage our anglers to focus closely on line movement which is another great reason to use Spiderwire Ultracast Invisi-Braid in 6-8#. In addition, we're also utilizing a fantastic and proven technique at Redfish University called The Fish Whistle(pictured below). It's quite easy to use by simply inserting the fish lips end of the device into the water on the side of your boat and then softly blow into the attached straw to create an underwater high-pitch sound that drives redfish and speckled trout into a feeding frenzy. Some anglers kept a small amount of fish and we had one much needed catch and release trip. Counts stayed steady with 20-40 great speckled trout and a handful of redfish in all sizes. Thanks again and see all you future Redfish University anglers in 2013. Big year!! E Holstman
