Redfish & Trout, Winter Patterns Have Started- Pensacola Fishing

Capt. John Rivers
December 13, 2012
Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

Saltwater Fishing Academy – December Red Fishing at its Finest!

Winter has finally shown up and this December is turning out to be as good as November. The only difference is it's a tad bit colder, which doesn't seem to bother these big reds, but makes the ride across the bay a little brisk.

November was warmer than usual, but it didn't have an effect on the fishing much. The cooler weather ought to really fire up both the redfish in the bay and the trout near to and up in the rivers. You can bet I'll be tying on some Drop-Shot rigs this week. I used them many times when I lived up north in Indiana bass fishing, and I've found them to be very useful for trout and even redfish in the upper bay areas.

Another great lure to use for trout and reds in the upper bay areas this time of year are crank baits just like you would use for bass. Yep, don't throw away your bass lures when fishing for trout and reds in the winter; the only thing you might need to do is switch out the freshwater hooks for saltwater.
Monday night we got a major cold front and woke up to temps around 30 degrees and the high for the day on Tuesday around 45. This drastic change in temperature will greatly affect the fish for a few days. Slowing down your presentation is a must and so is fishing the deep holes. Some will still be on the flats, but the majority of fish will dive to deeper holes for a few days. The rest of the week it is supposed to be cooler. I'll be out off and on this week and a lot next week both in the upper bay areas and in the bay going after the hard-pulling big reds.

My new venture SALTWATER FISHING ACADEMY has been a great success this year and I'm excited to see what 2013 brings. I started SALTWATER FISHING ACADEMY a few months back to help anglers become better at the reel and to show new anglers how to fish our local water. I have been fishing since I was old enough to hold a fishing rod, and although I don't claim to know everything there is to know about fishing, I can tell you that with over 40 years of fishing knowledge and 15 of those years spent right here in Pensacola, I've got a few tricks that might just help you become a better angler or help the new angler advance more efficiently. I'll post one more report before Christmas and then it's a New Years Report.
Here's an early Merry Christmas to all and wishes for safe and successful fishing this Holiday Season.
