It’s December, the weather is roaring in like a LION and the Bull REDS are running!! Last night at midnight it was 70 degrees and at the time I’m typing this report the temperature has dropped to 52 degrees with the forecasted low for tonight at 30 degrees. LOOK OUT FISH!!!

Well, it’s not all bad, as history has proved over and over again, once these fronts settle down the fishing gets fantastic. I have always looked forward to having these cold fronts pass through this time of the year (it’s almost winter anyway). These fronts cause the bait to ball up into tight wads, the tighter the bait balls get the tighter the schools of Bull Reds get and the easier they are to find.

Catching these fish is fairly simple; all you have to do is find them. You can bet that a school of five hundred, 25 pound fish will cause a fairly large commotion. First thing I do is scan the horizon for birds working a school of bait, if you see them working go to them, stop far enough away as not to spook the school and cast your lures into the frenzy. If you don’t see birds actually diving, but you see a lot of birds sitting on the water head in that direction watching the bottom machine. Those birds are there for a reason. The fish may have been pushing the bait up, but they’re down now. If you start marking pods of bait on the bottom machine, get up current, cut loose and drift across the pods of bait jigging a SPRO bucktail jig close to the bottom. The fish will hang out around the pods of bait after they have ambushed them picking up the leftovers off the bottom. This is a good way to get your day started. My bait of choice is the SPRO Bucktail Jig in the ¾ or 1 ounce size. Just about any color will work, but I really like the new Bunker color. Dress warm and take some extra clothes. There is nothing worse than to be on a nice school of fish and be so cold you can’t feel the rod in your hands. There are a lot of fish here now and more showing up everyday. Also, you will be able to catch these fish all the way through February and into March, depending on the weather. So book a trip now for the new year!!!

Man, I am so lucky to call this beautiful place home. A little Paradise on the Emerald Green waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

I know one thing for sure - You ain’t going to catch’em sittin’ on the couch!!

So get out there, and take a kid fishing.

Tight Lines and Screaming Drags, Till Next Time! God Bless.
