Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing Pensacola Bay and Choctawhatchee Bay with professional fishing guide Captain Eddie Woodall and Full Net Fishing Charters
For the most part, February has started out to be very typical- with cold temperatures, normal amounts of rain fall, very clear water, Big Bull Reds still available and the COBIA frenzy on every Florida Panhandle anglers mind. While searching the beach for the first Cobia of the season is not far away, the excitement is almost unbearable. Don’t wait too long to call to assure you get one of the prime days to try your hand at sight fishing one of these 100 pound beasts.
I have had a banner season catching and releasing the Bull Reds; I had several days that we landed 50+ of these awesome fish. By now most of the Reds have started there migration back into the Gulf. Yesterday I spotted a nice big school of Reds running the beach. There will still be a few of these nice fish to catch, but the 50+ fish days will have to wait 8 months. Be sure and mark Halloween on your calendar for the next running of the BULLS!! If you are interested in that once in a life time fishing experience you will never forget catching the Bull Red fish, call or e-mail Captain Eddie Woodall for some advice.
Since the Speckled Trout season is closed the month of February, there has been little to no pressure put on these fish. But with March a few weeks away and the water temperature about normal, I’m looking for the big sow Specks to be on the grass flats soon. I’ll start searching at the mouths of the bayous and rivers soon. These fish will be hungry and will eat just about anything they can catch. For the avid Speckled Trout fisherman April is also the month to be booking a trip to try and catch a true Gator Trout, this is when I catch the most of my biggest Specks. A Speckled Trout up to 36 inches and between 8 and 10 pounds would be a sure enough WALL HANGER!
With the Sheephead being a fine table fare, now is the time to start planning your trip. They will be stacking up in Pensacola Pass in good numbers over the next month. They will be there by the thousands for about six weeks as they perform there annual spawning ritual. Catching an eight to ten pound Sheepie is not uncommon early in the season. These fish are a blast on light tackle also. We call them inshore Snapper. They pull like a freight train when you set the hook. This is a great time to take the family fishing; the action is fast and furious and no-stop.
I know one thing for sure - You ain’t going to catch’em sittin’ on the couch!!
So get out there, and take a kid fishing.
Tight Lines and Screaming Drags, Till Next Time! God Bless.
