Panhandle Fishing Report - Pensacola Bay & Choctawhatchee Bay

Capt. Eddie Woodall
February 26, 2007
Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

The man in the brown suit better look out, it’s going to be tough on this guy when he gets close to the Florida Panhandle, you do know who the man in the brown suit is don’t you --- yea, MR. COBIA.

Most of the Bull Reds have made their way out into the Gulf and are feasting on sand fleas close to the beach. You still have a good chance to land one of these bronze beauties, but the fishing conditions will need to be in your favor. I have been doing well sight fishing for these fish in the 4 to 6 foot of water from Pensacola Pass east to the Pier. Look for a sunshiny day with light winds from the southeast to north and hit the beach. Not only is this going to be a fun trip, but it’s only days away from the start of the Cobia run. Who knows, you could be the angler to claim the first Cobia of the season.

With all the rain and warm weather, I’m looking for the flats fishing to go off real soon. I did a little looking around a couple of days ago and sighted a couple of nice gator Speck sunning on the sand along with a few slot Reds hanging around warming themselves also.

If you’re looking to grease up the frying pan, look no further. Go to the 3 mile bridge rubble in Pensacola Bay with some live shrimp and fill your cooler up with Whiting, White Trout, Black Drum and slot sized Red fish. I’m also still finding a few inshore Grouper around the structure in Pensacola Bay.

So, as winter narrows to an end I’m looking forward to a great spring. If you have never been lucky enough to experience the Emerald Coast in the spring time now’s your chance. It’s Great!!!!

I know one thing for sure - You ain’t going to catch’em sittin’ on the couch!!

So get out there, and take a kid fishing.

Tight Lines and Screaming Drags, Till Next Time! God Bless.
