Panhandle Fishing Report - Pensacola Bay & Choctawhatchee Bay

Capt. Eddie Woodall
April 5, 2007
Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

April is in and Easter is just a few days away. Lets all take a minuet to look around the great outdoors and ponder on; that who could think there is no God!! I’m the lucky one that has a job that I love and get to work with people of all shapes and sizes men, women and children that all share the same enthusiasm for the outdoors as I do. Every morning and every evening I thank the Lord for allowing me to be here another day to enjoy the things that belong to him and that he placed on this earth for us to use. I want to wish a Happy Easter to all.

The Speckled Trout bite is on; I landed my first gator Monday April 2nd. She weighed 6 pounds and 4 oz. And was 27 inches long, a great fight on the 8-pound outfit that I was using. She ate a soft plastic jerk bait - salt and pepper with chartreuse tipped tail made by Norton Lures rigged on the new Gamakatsu Skip Gap Hook. If you haven’t seen the new Skip Gap Hook by Gamakatsu check it out its an awesome hook for the weightless soft plastics. The flats are teaming with schools of slot Red Fish also, big schools of 15 to 20 fish are roaming the flats in search of shrimp and crabs to fill there never ending appetite. Try free lining live shrimp on a 1/0 hook or a small 1/8 or 1/16 oz lead head jig and a live shrimp or a Berkley Gulp for the Reds on the flats. Then when the sun gets high overhead go to the docks and pitch your baits up close to the shadows. This is where they will be during the middle part of the day.

Down around Pensacola Pass the Sheephead are eating everything that gets close to them. The big females have mostly finished spawning and are hungry. Catching your limit on these fish should be fairly easy. Carolina rig with a 1/0 hook and as little weight you can use to keep your bait semi straight down is all you need. These fish a re blast to catch on light tackle, we call the inshore Snapper as they are built similar to the Red Snapper and pull like a fright train!!

Out on the Beach the fish are there, lots of Spanish Mackerel, Red Fish, Pompano, Sharks, Blue Fish, Jacks and a few Triple Tail are showing up. The mighty Cobia Run is about to bust wide open. There were a few days last week when a good number of fish came through but it’s been quiet since. So this means that the big push of fish should only be a few days away.

All in all the fishing has been great!! It the time of the year that we have been waiting for the last three months. SOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

I know one thing for sure - You ain’t going to catch’em sittin’ on the couch!!

So get out there, and take a kid fishing.

Tight Lines and Screaming Drags, Till Next Time! God Bless.
