Panhandle Fishing Report - Pensacola Bay & Choctawhatchee Bay

Capt. Eddie Woodall
April 25, 2007
Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

OK, somebody turn off the fan!!!! This east wind is a killer up here and it’s a blowin’.

The last few days have been tough fishing. Although the fish are there and eating it sure is rough on the angler trying to fish in 15 to 20 mph winds, not to mention it kicks up the waves in the sound & bay which makes it tough getting around..

The inshore fishing is just getting better everyday despite the wind and the water temperature is rebounding nicely after the cold snap. The slot Red Fish are back at their old hangouts and are not bothered by the east wind, all you need is a rising tide. I have been catching them in the shallow water around the spotted grass. Soft plastic jerk baits are a good choice, but the Red Fish magic spinner baits have been catching most of the fish. The Speckled Trout are still on the live Shrimp around the deep-water access. The flats are warming back up and this will cause the Trout to hit the flats with a vengeance in the next few days. There are lots of Flounder around the Pensacola Pass and we have been catching some big ones, too. The Sheephead are still around but just not in the big numbers. If you like catching Pompano, now is the time to get out there and fill your cooler with the little monsters. It seems that the pink jig is doing very well and the yellow and orange are a strong second. But, don’t go with out some sand fleas. Sand Fleas are the Pompano’s main diet this time of the year and sometimes the fleas are all they will eat.

Jeff Kelley and his bunch did well!

I went Snapper fishing for the first time in 2007 last Thursday. We went on a very slow moving tide and this caused the fish to be a little finicky. We caught our limit but we had to go through about 25 little fish to get it. I haven’t caught a Cobia yet; I have only been out looking 2 times this year and both times we never spotted any. But, there is still plenty of time to get one. It has been a good season for the Cobia fisherman- the weather has been perfect, giving them plenty of time on the water. There is lots of Spanish mackerel to be found at this time and there are a good number of King Mackerel showing up also. It won’t be long till we will be out there hearing the sweet sound of burning drags to the mighty speedsters.

I know one thing for sure - You ain’t going to catch’em sittin’ on the couch!!

So get out there, and take a kid fishing.

Tight Lines and Screaming Drags, Till Next Time! God Bless.
