Panhandle Fishing Report - Pensacola Bay & Choctawhatchee Bay

Capt. Eddie Woodall
November 2, 2007
Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

Bull Reds or slot size Red Fish - whatever you're looking for. Fishing in and around Pensacola Pass is your best bet for the big fish and slot fish right now. Try drift fishing with bait on the bottom, a variety of live or dead baits will work. I like to use 1 ½ to 2 ounces of weight and a piece of cut bait to try and locate the fish. Once I have found where they are holding I then switch over to a SPRO Buck tail Jig and try and catch them on artificial baits.

The inshore fish are starting their migration pattern to the north. If a nice stringer of Speckled Trout is what you are after then head up to the north ends of the bays and fish around the mouths of the rivers and oyster beds around the bay. Just about any and all artificial baits are catching fish. Try on the grass flats and around the docks with soft plastics and small top water plugs. The water is clear and the fish can be very spooky so go slow and make long casts. Try using the SPRO DAWG 100 top water plug; it’s been catching lots of big Trout for me. They are cruising around the flats in search of mullet to fatten up on for the winter.

Flounder fishing continues to be slow yet for both rod-and-reel anglers and gigger’s alike. It's early in the season for them to be moving, so expect a heavy run when they do decide to move. Live minnows will work great, but Berkley Gulp shrimp will catch them also.

There are still a few Spanish Mackerel being caught around the Pensacola Bay Bridge and the old Bay Front Auditorium, but they are thinning out a lot. The menhaden have started moving from the bayous out into the bay, and so have the fish.

Everyone must believe in something… I believe I’ll go fishing!!

I know one thing for sure - You ain’t going to catch’em sittin’ on the couch!!

So get out there, and take a kid fishing.

Tight Lines and Screaming Drags, Till Next Time! God Bless.
