Panhandle Fishing Report - Pensacola Bay & Choctawhatchee Bay

Capt. Eddie Woodall
December 11, 2007
Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

December in Paradise - HO, HO, HO Merry Christmas!!!!

I watched the weather forecast this morning for the next 3 days - what more could you ask for. Lows in the upper 60's and highs near 80 degrees - WOW - and the fishing has been just as hot too. If caching lots of Bull Red fish has ever been something you've wanted to do, now is as good of a time as any to try and accomplish this feat.

There are more fish showing up every day and with the fish that are already here, who knows just how good the fishing will be the next few months. Catching these fish is fairly easy; the hard part can be finding them. If the fish are feeding the birds will give their location away. If the fish are not pushing the bait to the surface then you have to locate the fish laid up on the bottom. This is where knowing their local hangouts come in handy. Lots of anglers troll deep diving plugs in hope of dragging one close to a school of fish. Once you've located the fish, drift around the school casting 1 ounce SPRO buck-tail jigs and jig them off the bottom. I like the buck-tail jigs because they will get to the bottom a whole lot faster than most other kinds of lures. If you get close to the fish you will catch them, I haven't found one yet that will turn down an easy meal.

Most all the other inshore fishing has taken a back seat to the Bull Reds right now. I just can't seem to pull myself away from these big schools of Red Fish to try and catch a Speckled Trout or two!! I did catch three Nice Bay Grouper (Gag Grouper) a couple of days ago. These fish migrate into the bay in the early winter to spawn, and if you hit it just right you could load up the cooler with a few ten pounders also!!!

Good Luck out there and Merry Christmas.

Capt. Eddie

If people concentrated on the REALLY important things in life.... there would be a shortage of fishing poles!

I know one thing for sure - You ain’t going to catch’em sittin’ on the couch!!

So get out there, and take a kid fishing.

Tight Lines and Screaming Drags, Till Next Time! God Bless.
