Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

January 2008 is here!! The weather seems like May; today's high is 72 degrees - wow! All this drastic changing weather has had an effect on the fish. Normally the Bull Red Fish would be moved into the bay in good numbers but they haven't. In my professional opinion there is still way to much bait for the fish on the beach. The fish are scattered also which makes them difficult to find. What I mean by scattered is normally the cold weather would cause the bait to gather up into tight balls, and then the fish would be more concentrated also. Well it's just not happening yet; it's just been too seasonally warm.
There's lots of winter False Albacore in close now and they're a great fish to target on light tackle. There are also a good number of slot sized Red Fish showing up in the surf. There seems to be lots of sand fleas in the surf right now and the Reds are eating them up, so get close to the beach and watch out for those guys.
Deeper in the bay to the north the Speckled Trout are holding up in the deep water. On the warmer days they will move out to the flats in search of food and they will continue do so until the cold weather sets in for good. Remember that the season for the Speckled Trout will close on January 31st.
Give a man a fish; feed him for a day...Teach a man to fish; you get rid of him for the weekend.
I know one thing for sure - You ain’t going to catch’em sittin’ on the couch!!
So get out there, and take a kid fishing.
Tight Lines and Screaming Drags, Till Next Time! God Bless.
