Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

Light Tackel Fishing for Kings
Rise and shine! It’s time to hit the water for some big drag-screaming summer kings. That’s what this week has been all about.
Cody and his mom Karen shows Cody's first ever King!
The mackerel are here and the bite has been great. Not only are the kings around, but their smaller counterparts Spanish mackerel are here too, but they’re not running small by any means. Most of the fish I’ve caught have been well over 4lbs, with a few closer to 7lbs. Watch the tides as this has a big effect on the bite; Kings like some current, as do most fish, and I have found that the bite is a little better with a small chop in the water as opposed to calmer seas. Closer inshore just off the beaches the Skipjacks are thick, and so are Spanish and Bluefish. Catching these toothy critters on light tackle is always a good time.
I’ve also been hooking up a few nice Redfish in the pass by drifting live and dead baits along the bottom. Don’t be surprised if you bring up a black snapper or a keeper red snapper, as they too frequent the pass from time to time.
July has been a great month for fishing, so what are you waiting for?
Let’s get you hooked up on a big summer King.
See you on the water.
Capt. John
