Pensacola, Navarre & Perdido Key

Capt. John Rivers
August 11, 2007
Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

Record Breaking Temperatures the Past Few Days!

Hot is an understatement this past week, with temperatures from 90 –100 degrees and heat indexes near 115 degrees. All I can say is drink plenty of water while you are fishing. This heat has had a negative effect on King fishing the past few days, with just a few fish being caught on a few of my past trips.

Not only has the King bite been a bit slow, so has the Spanish mackerel bite. As soon as the weather gets back to normal, the bite should pick back up. Bluefish and Ladyfish are still thick in the bay, but you have to jig deep for them, as they also don’t like the higher temperatures. I’ve been working the deeper holes in the pass for some Redfish and Black Snapper, and the bite there has been much better. Live shrimp and small cigar minnows have been producing some good catches.

The shark bite has been pretty good early in the morning; most of the sharks are in the 2ft range, which are great for kids to fight on light tackle. While fishing for Sharks on one of my spots, I’ve hooked into a few nice keeper Grouper that were a nice surprise.

If you’re looking for some good nearshore action the next few weeks, give me a shout as the temperatures should be back to normal and the fishing will too.

See you on the water.

Capt. John.
