Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

Cooler temperatures and good fishing
September 20, 2007
Fishing this week along the panhandle has been very good for trout, which have been found up and down the ICW on the flats. The water has started to cool, and that has helped the bite.
Redfishing on the docks is still productive, however, you might have to visit more docks than you would like until you find one that’s holding fish. I have been to a few of my favorite docks and there were no fish, but I knew that I would find them on one of the other docks. Anchor out away from the dock and pitch a small 3" Berkeley shrimp on a flutter hook, let it sit, wait for that thump, and then SET THE HOOK!
I like to use 12 - 14 lb braid on my reels when dock fishing for Reds, to assure that I can pull them out to open water and fight them there. In and around the pass on the rocks jetties, the black snapper bite is still going strong, and we are also catching a few nice Spanish mackerel in the mix, so make sure you have a second rod rigged for these toothy critters.
Nearshore on the wrecks, the king bite has picked back up and they are running a little bigger than in the spring. Ladyfish and Bluefish are all over the surf and the bite has been very good. They will just about hit any type of lure like a small Spro white buck tail jig or a small 2" soft-body silver and black Berkeley jerk bait. These fish hit hard and are fun to fight on light tackle. The whole family can enjoy hooking up these fish while out enjoying the milder weather here in the Panhandle.
This coming week, there is a low forming in the gulf that will cause the gulf and our bays to be a bit rougher. After the low moves out, the fishing should get cranking again. I have found from past experience, that after a low or tropical disturbance moves through, that the fishing is off the charts both inshore and offshore. So get your tackle squared away and get ready for that catch of a lifetime.
Till next time, here’s wishing you bent rods and screaming drags.
