Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing Report 4/8/04
INSHORE - The water temperature is finally getting right. We are catching good numbers of Spanish Mackerel in and around the mouth of Pensacola Pass. Clark spoons, Gotcha’s lures, and float and straw rigs are doing well with these guys.
Sheepheads are so thick it is unbelievable. We used 12 dozen shrimp in 31/2 hours last Sunday and only kept 15 of the biggest. We released at least 45 more, caught a nice mess of Mangrove Snapper, and some small Gag Grouper also.
I’ve been seeing some real nice schools of Jacks roaming the beach. They seem to be running the trough all the way up to 2 foot of water. They will eat just about anything. I like throwing the Top Dog Jr. or the Super Spook. These guys will destroy a top water plug. The key is to get the bait out in front of the school. When they get close enough to see and hear it, start working it as fast as you can and keep it in the water. More than likely, the first fish will miss it so don’t stop working it because the second one always has better aim!
This warmer weather will set the cobia fishing in high gear. We lost a nice 50# fish last Tuesday, and won’t get another chance to hunt for the cobia till tomorrow,
The big female Specks are now making their way to the flats. In the last few days we have been catching nice 4 and 5 lb. Trout with some regularity.
The Pompano are becoming more and more plentiful as everyday passes and there are a few Bull Reds still around, sight casting to them in the shallow water is a blast, but most have made their way back to the Gulf.
Offshore – The offshore boats are doing well with Big Red Snapper. The season is closed until (04/14/04). The Grouper and Beeliners along with some nice Trigger fish are tearing it up on the bottom structure.
It’s Spring time in FULL BLOOM! Get on the water, the fishing is Great!
Till next time; Tight lines and Screaming Drags, God Bless.
