Panhandle Fishing Report - Pensacola Bay & Choctawhatchee Bay

Capt. Eddie Woodall

Pensacola - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing Report

5/1/04

Near shore - May is the month we’ve been waiting for, now everything is taking off with a BANG! Out on the beach and in the sound the big schools of drag burning Jack Crevalle are show up in full force, there are still a few Bull Reds being caught trolling the Mann’s stretch 25+, just on the outside of the second sandbar, the bait is showing up in full force, the Destin Pass is teaming with cigar minnows and herring, of coarse this brings all the other game fish with them, Kings are becoming a regular item, more and more big schools of Spanish are showing up everyday. The Cobia run is narrowing down to just a couple of more weeks, there have been a lot of sightings of schools of the smaller males cruising the beach with a good 70 pound fish thrown in every now and then. When the smaller males start showing up in force, in the past proves to be getting towards the end of the run. The Red Snapper fishermen have been taking a beating this last week with a fairly steady south, southeast wind at 15 to 20 knots its been fairly rocky out there, the bigger 30 pound Snapper have been coming off the deeper reefs in 150 foot of water, there are some good catches of legal fish coming off the reefs in the State waters also.

If you haven’t seen or heard about this big Mako Shark that was caught off Panama City Pier take a look at this. 780 pound 11 foot long!

Inshore – The good numbers of Speckled Trout are just around the corner, we are catching most of the fish on structure like docks and oyster beds as the flats grass has not grown enough yet to keep the fish hid. The early morning and late afternoon bite has been producing the biggest Trout on top water plugs like the Chug Bug and Super Spook Jr. but after the sun gets up and goes to work the sows are heading for deeper water structure, lead head jigs with shrimp tails and live Shrimp are your best bet for these fish. There are a lot of the pup Reds around the same structure too, some holes you will catch both and the next hole will only have one or the other holding on it. Flounder are here and there, not many yet though, a couple of weeks they will be more on those guys. A friend of mine saw 2 Tarpon off the Navarre Beach Pier last week, and another inshore captain spotted a couple at Pensacola Pass last weekend, ALRIGHT maybe an early Tarpon season this year. The water is real salty and super clear this makes for excellent shallow water sight fishing, so for you wade fisherman put on an old pair of tennis shoes and hit the flats early in the morning around the Navel Live Oaks area in Gulf Breeze or the flats West of Navarre Beach Bridge on the North or South side of the sound and have some fun!

Till next time, Screaming Drags and tight lines, God Bless.
