Saltwater Fishing Academy Fishing Report Jan 1-16
Pensacola's Finest Instructional Fishing Charter – Learn tips, techniques, and what the newest and hottest lures are on the market that help catch more fish.

Mother Nature must have looked at the calendar wrong the first two weeks of January as we were in the upper 60's to low 70's most of the time. On the 16th we had a major cold front move in, which brought the temps down into the 40's and 50's, which is more what January and February are usually like. There is a neap tide the next two days and with that and the cold front it will be a few days for the fish to adjust, but then it should be off the chain.
The fishing for trout and redfish the past couple of weeks has been pretty decent. I had some great instructional fishing trips. We mainly targeted fish in Escambia & Blackwater Bay and the local bayous. We used all artificials and worked in depths ranging from 3 –15ft of water. I use a variety of lures when fishing for trout in the upper bay areas. These include Berkley Gulp's 3" shrimp and 5" jerk shads, MirrOlure's 17MR & 18MR and Bass Assassin's 4" paddle tails. Most are rigged either on a ¼ oz or 5/0 weighted worm hook.
I also showed a few out -of -towners how to fish the bridges for reds and where to catch the white trout. The white trout are plentiful in the winter months; they range from 13" –17". We even catch some over 19" from time to time. These cousins of the speckled trout are great for fish fries, and you can keep quite a few, so invite the neighbors. My lure of choice for white trout and redfish on the bridge is Berkley's Gulp Alive 3" shrimp and 5" jerk shad.
As always see www.MyFWC.com for regulations on all species of fish before you go fishing.
