Pine Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing report for the week ending 1/3/10 with the coldest weather we have seen in a while its time to change techniques, the aggressive mackeral, bluefish, ladyfish and pompano have slowed with the cooler temperatures and a lack of baitfish to eat. These fish should return in better numbers when they get adjusted to the colder water.

This is a great time of year to fish potholes, the shallower the better. If you can find deep holes back in the flats on low incoming tides they will produce some of the best trout fishing during the year, there will also be some good slot redfish but not in as great numbers. Presentation is key, these fish do not want to chase there food. Slower and deeper are better, if you can ease a softbait or live shrimp on a jighead thru the holes this is the best bet. On the warmer days before the fronts which look to be few a top-water plug will attract larger redfish and trout.

Smaller rat reds up to 20 inches are showing up on deeper mangrove shorelines, your best bet is a shrimp live or dead cut in half with a splitshot on the bottom. A lot of people find these reds while fishing for sheepshead which are biting well, I have found that if you want to catch the redfish and not the sheepshead use a bigger circle hook. The circle hook will let you get the redfish and not hook the sheepshead, you also wont gut-hook the redfish. Pictured are a few redfish and seatrout that we caught in colder weather. Dont stop fishing just because its colder there are plenty of fish to catch. Tight lines.
