A change in the air says Fall is near

Capt. Gary Clark

Pine Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing report for the week ending 9-19-2010

A change in the morning air temperatures has brought a sure sign Fall is on the way. A week that had high preasure in command with east winds gave us a couple of weak fronts. This was a busy week for hurricaines with three major storms thank goodness far out in the Atlantic.

With cooler morning temperatures than we have seen in months fish are getting very active. Redfish are schooling in all of the bays in the area sometimes in the hundreds, these fish can be seen pushing wakes on or near shallow grass flats feeding as they move. They can be quite spooky at times, I like to use top water plugs as a good way to find or keep a distance from the schools in order not to run them off. If you can get them to settle in a spot you cant beat cutbait, ladyfish or pinfish to give the best results

They are loads of baitfish in the bay and on the beaches and all of our fish are taking advantage of the surplus of food. There is good seatrout fishing anywhere schools of bait can be found, shinners under a popping cork thrown near the bait works best. While fishing for redfish some nice larger trout are showing up regularly.

There have been some spotty pods of Tarpon on the beaches but they are hit and miss, keep a Tarpon rod on the boat you will be glad you did. The last couple of years I have seen some decent schools of Tarpon on a regular basis just before the cooler weather runs them off for winter.

This is one of my favorite times of the year to throw top water plugs, if you dont mind doing some casting you can reep the benifits of some very aggressive fish and catch quality fish. Theres nothing more fun than watching a redfish hit a top water plug, it will also produce some large sea trout.

For those of you who are here or planning to visit in the next several weeks take advantage of some great fishing an no crowds.
