Cool weather is the norm these days

Capt. Gary Clark
February 21, 2010
Pine Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing report for the week ending 2/21/10 Tuesday was a cool and breezy day that had us ducking into Tarpon Bay to get out of the wind, a few rat reds up to 18 inches and sheepshead kept us busy until around 11am when we were able to get out of the santuary and find a large pothole out of the wind in San Carlos Bay holding trout. We were able to get dozens of 14 inch trout and enough legal ones for dinner.

The tendancy the last couple of weeks has been to stick a live or dead shrimp right in the fishes face to get a bite, being impatient really can hurt you this time of year the fish just dont want to chase anything.

I have gone away from throwing jigs or plugs because the fish are just to slow to catch them, a live shrimp Carolina rigged with a splitshot 2ft. up the leader with a circle hook has been effective for trout and redfish.

Thursday and especially Saturday brought us warmer temps and lighter winds, where even when the weather is nice for us there are times when a little cloud cover or lack of tide can really turn the fish off. The cool water temps make the midday with sunshine much more productive. I find myself fishing spots longer to avoid the cold rides between them. Spring will be here soon I hope. Tight Lines, Get out and fish.
