The end of summer is near

Pine Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing report for the week ending 9-5-2010

With the end of summer at hand we are still in a very wet pattern with loads of fresh water getting into the bay from the river and run off.
Snook season for the fall will be canceled until further notice, with my approval and that of many guides. These fish need a break from tournaments and local fishing, remember you can still catch them but its catch and release.
I have been targeting redfish on the higher tides on mangrove shorelines, oysterbars and grass flats. Cut bait is working best with lots of floating grass and tons of pinfish making it hard to keep a shinner alive for very long.
Seatrout and Spanish mackerel have still been good in and around the passes and anywhere you can find schooling bait. Live shinners either free lined or under a popping cork works best.
Sharks are everywhere, small ones around the schooling bait and bigger lemons in the sound on the lower tides.
There are a few reports of spotty pods of tarpon on the beaches but they are hard to target with any regularity. We may get one last good shot at them in October if conditions are right they will gang up just before they leave for the winter.
