Pine Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Week ending 5/24/14...........
The week began on Tuesday with my good friend Don Marano. He and Dawn were now on Captiva, and I wanted to introduce Don to Clam Bayou. As is the case with most folks, he'd never been there. We had almost no moving water throughout the whole day, but what little movement we did have was after 1 PM. So, we started our day late.
The poor tide outside Clam translated to a horrible tide inside. We fished hard, and saw the water move only perhaps 2 inches all day. The bite was very poor, but we did catch a few fish. Between the two of us, we hooked 5 snook and boated 3, and 3 catfish. Don did best with the snook. I did best with catfish on the jig! It's not often you see a hardhead cat eat a jig, but common for gaftop sail catfish. It was pretty breezy, but that helped to keep us cool. It was a fun day in a beautiful place with a good friend. That's what it's all about.
Friday morning I met Phil Fiscella, of Champaign, Illinois, for a breakfast brain picking session. It was similar to what I do in my one-on-one fishing seminars, but instead of leading the subject matter and going for five to six hours, etc., Phil asked questions about things he wanted to know. We met at the Island Cow on Sanibel, and were there for probably three hours. They didn't seem to mind we took up space for so long, and the seafood omelet is to die for. It was an enjoyable morning, and Phil was very personable.
I spent much of Saturday with my friends, Don and Dawn Marano. It was time to pick up his boat and bring it back to its storage rack until they return in November. We went to a cool little place down in St. James City, that had Tiki in the name, but I'll be darned if I can remember what it was, now. Very laid back, casual, and island, with great food.
Afterward we hung out on the patio over the water and marveled at all the Memorial Day traffic going through Jig Creek. Memorial Day weekend is known in many circles as Amateur Weekend, and for good reason.
