Fishing Report for Pine Island Sound to Sarasota Bay, Florida

Capt. Butch Rickey
June 27, 2002
Pine Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

REPORT FOR WEEK ENDING 6/22/2002 by Capt. Butch Rickey

What a week to go on vacation! It stormed and rained nearly all week as a tropical low pressure wave sat over us. But, then it was probably better to be on vacation than having trips booked every day that likely would have been canceled. I did have a trip booked for Friday, which I did run.

My trip was with Dr. Tom Wright and his lovely wife Lindsay, of Huntsville, Alabama. We left at first light, and headed to Chino for bait, which has been very good. From there we decided we’d chase redfish, but I wondered how much fishing we might actually get to do.

The weather Gods were with us, though, but the fish we’re in a good eating mood. We got on the redfish, and Tom and Lindsay missed /lost several and boated a half dozen or so. Tom also hooked a big ray that gave him a fit for a while. We certainly caught enough to have fun with, but I really wanted to get the fish to turn on for us so I could wear Tom out.

I’m hearing a lot of folks say they’re having a hard time finding redfish, but there are a lot of redfish in the Sound. I’m finding them on both sides of the Sound, both north and south. Business is about to fall on it’s face for the summer I’m afraid, but I think the redfishing will be good when we are out there.
