Pine Island Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Week Ending 9-29-12...........
Vacation is over, and I've got most of the fires put out, that erupted while I was away. I got out Wednesday of this week with my friend and fishing buddy Alan Sanders. He's got a new Ranger Banshee 16 that I hadn't been in yet, and I was looking forward to a day of fishing in her.
Alan decided we'd launch from Pineland Marina on Pine Island. He had been on great redfish action in that area before Isaac came through. Sounded good to me. We met at his house in Cape Coral at 7 AM, had some coffee, transferred my gear, and headed out.
It was a beautiful morning in the high 70s. The water was slick, the air cool. Alan jumped the Banshee up on plane just before the channel rocks and we were off on our adventure. The Banshee reminded me of my Talon, although a totally different hull design, as it will go just about anywhere. It's rigged with about everything you could ever want, and is very comfortable.
The reds were nowhere to be found where Alan had left them. Alan was fishing shrimp and jigs, and I worked artificials. I got a ladyfish which went into the well. We got some snapper and pinfish, but the reds eluded us.
I showed Alan a couple of spots I used to fish on the rare occasions that I went further north than Demere Key. While en route, we had a very strange thing happen. A beautiful pompano jumped into the boat, and hit me in the leg as he boarded. He wound up in the back of the cockpit, and Alan managed to get him in the well before he could flop himself over the gunwales. Later, Alan got the first and second redfish on ladyfish steaks from the one I'd caught early on. I did put on a piece of cut bait toward the end, but got only a catfish.
We called it a day as the tide stopped moving, and headed for home. It was nothing short of wonderful being on the water after a two month absence, and it was great to be out with Alan, again.
Next week I'm back to my kayak fishing, which I've really missed. The weather is really moderating, and it's time to book your fall trips. Those redfish and snook are waiting!
